Course Description

Business managers now face an even greater challenge in managing an ever-keen competitive landscape which more than ever before comes in many different forms and from a great variety of competitors. Success in positioning the business organization as well as in effectively optimizing decisions on the correct allocation of resources, and in deciding what an acceptable level of performance might be in such a competitive environment requires very good understanding of competition strategies. This course is therefore designed to provide the skills needed for understanding and analysing competition among firms and within industries.

Expected Learning Outcomes

At the end of the sessions, participants will:

  1. Learn how to determine the opportunities and threats that exist for firms within a competitive environment. They should be able to appreciate how the various forces operating in an industry create or limit the chances for survival;
  2. Learn how to identify competitive gaps in the market for products, services or other positioning initiatives;
  3. Learn to determine the strengths and weaknesses of a firm and to determine the core competence that can be built on to establish a competitive advantage;
  4. Learn about the practical considerations to apply techniques, based on the lessons from various recent cases where such techniques have been applied;
